Meet Serena

Hello! I’m Serena, and I’m so thrilled that you’re here.

You may have picked up on the food-centric nature of this website, so I just want to note that I’m not someone who can claim a lifelong love of food and cooking. Given that I was an upsettingly picky eater until college and my only culinary role model was my mother, a woman well-versed in the fine art of burning things, it remains a constant source of shock and delight to my family and friends that I’m a professional “food person.”

After graduating from college, I enrolled in the basic program at Le Cordon Bleu Paris on a seemingly fateful whim. My early cooking school days were mildly traumatic—which is unsurprising as the only dish I’d successfully “cooked” up to that point was a burnt grilled cheese—but after a couple months, I had become a completely different person. I was gutting and filleting fish, deboning chickens, breaking down whole rabbits, and whipping up hollandaise sauce without breaking a sweat. The most insane part? I loved every second of it. Realizing that I’d found a possible calling, I enthusiastically signed on to complete the full diploma program and never looked back.

I started a blog while living in Paris with no goal in mind other than to casually share some of my new skills with other culinarily-challenged souls (namely my friends at home who I assumed would be the only ones interested in reading it). There was a lot of pink, Julia Child quotes, and Blackberry photos on domesticatemoiblogspot.com back in the day, but I had a clear purpose: Help others create delicious meals in a way that felt realistic and, more importantly, FUN.

Since graduating from Le Cordon Bleu and starting said blog, I’ve worn a few different culinary hats—private chef to players on the New York Giants (a story for another time), freelance writer, recipe developer, cookbook author, and culinary instructor. In all these roles, I’ve remained committed to my goal of making cooking and entertaining as accessible and enjoyable as possible, and nothing brings me more satisfaction than helping people gain confidence in the kitchen.

With that said, we all contain multitudes, and I’m excited to share more of my non-food related passions with you here as well. From fashion and beauty to travel, medium-trashy literature, and mental health, you’ll find tried-and-true recommendations, tips and tricks, and heartfelt musings from a woman doing her best to spread a little joy and promote human connection in a batshit crazy world.

I currently split time between New York City and Sag Harbor with my husband, Logan, and my outrageously fluffy dog, Taco (who I am shamelessly obsessed with). I take my coffee with half and half and one Splenda, my clothes chair is forever out of control, and I eat more gummy candy than an adult woman should. You’ll often find me in an aggressively hot bath, likely planning my next dinner party or trip. Ideally with a glass of champagne. Again, I’m so happy you’re here.

xox, Serena
